10K vs 14K vs 18K Gold
10K, 14K and 18K describe the gold content of a gold alloy. The number tells you purity, while the piece’s construction tells you how it is made.
Gold purity at a glance

Shop 18K gold →Is 10K real gold?
Yes. 10K, 14K and 18K are gold alloys with different gold content. Mixing gold with other metals changes properties such as color and durability. A higher karat means more gold by proportion, not that every higher karat piece is automatically the best choice for your needs.
Does 14K mean solid construction?
Purity and construction are separate questions. A gold chain can use solid or hollow links. Hollow links can give a larger appearance with less metal, so ask about the construction as well as the karat and gram weight.
What is the difference between gold and gold plating?
A gold alloy contains gold mixed through the material. Gold plating is a surface layer over another metal. A piece described as gold over sterling silver has silver underneath; it should be compared with other plated silver pieces, not assumed to be a 10K, 14K or 18K gold alloy throughout.
Why can two similar chains cost differently?
- Purity: compare the karat.
- Weight: compare grams at the same length and width.
- Construction: confirm solid or hollow links.
- Details: consider the clasp, finish, stones and workmanship.
For example, a heavier 10K piece may contain more total gold than a much lighter 14K piece. Pure gold content is estimated by multiplying metal weight by purity. For stone set jewelry, total item weight also includes stones and may include other components.
What do yellow, white and rose gold mean?
Gold alloys can have different colors at the same karat. Copper contributes to rose gold’s color; white gold uses a different alloy mixture and is often finished with rhodium. Color alone does not establish purity.
